Meera (actress)

Irtiza Rubab[1] (known by her stage name Meera), is a Pakistani film actress, television presenter, model and philanthropist.[2] Born and raised inLahorePunjab, she studied at the Kinnaird College and started her modelling career in television in 1995. She briefly modelled for various multi-international companies, including Pepsi and LUX which helped her to came to national prominence. Her success at modelling made her a nationwide celebrity that has led to roles in television and film industry of Pakistan.
She made her first motion picture debut in 1995, but she earned nationwide critical in 1999 for her leading performance in Khilona, which was released in 1999. Khilona earned her first Nigar Award and earned critical acclaim for her work. With the release of Inteha, another critical and commercial success, Meera won the second consecutive Nigar Award for Best Actress of the year for her break-out performance. In 2004, she played a prominent role in Salakhain which lifted her image internationally.[3] In 2005, she acted in joint Indo-Pakistani film, Nazar which she debuted her career inBollywood; although, she earned critical acclaim for her acting, but a scene featured a kissing scene (afterwards cut) became controversial in Pakistan.[4]
Meera remains constantly in news in regarding her marriage issues and alleged affair with cricketer Shoaib Akhtar.[2] In 2013, Meera announced her plans for bidding in upcoming nationwide general election on the reserved seats for women in the State parliament of Pakistan.[5][6]

Bollywood[edit]

Meera did her first movie in India, named Nazar[7] which had her as the first Pakistani actress to be seen in India after a very long gap, as well as it was the beginning of the India Pakistan peace talks. Nazar was a film directed by Soni Razdan and it was the first Indo-Pakistani joint movie venture in 50 years. The film introduced Pakistani actress Meera to Bollywood and it also featured a kissing scene (afterwards cut) which was center of attention for the Pakistani government. It became the target of many conservatives for doing a kissing scene with her Indian co-star. Her second movie was Kasak[8] starring Lucky Ali. Although Kasak did not do well at the Box office, Meera still kept her work alive in Bollywood until the Mumbai attacks which slowed her down. Her third film Paanch Ghantey Mien Paanch Crore which also did not do well at the Box Office. The film was not screened for Press and Critics as the director Faisal Saif wanted to show the film directly to the audience.The film managed a decent opening of 50% with its limited cinema release. However, The Times of India listed the film in Bollywood's Top 10 Bold Film category of 2012.[9]

She was a participant in a television show named Kon Baney Ga Meera Pati in which she selected a young man out of a total of fourteen for marriage, but then married none. Later, she got engaged to an American Pilot of Pakistani origin.[10]

Other involvements[edit]

Meera also joined hands with Imran Khan in the telethon for the victims of the 2010 Pakistan floods.[11]

Controversies[edit]

Meera's kissing scene[12] with co-star Ashmit Patel[13][14] was the major highlight in news in both Pakistan and India[15] as well as she received death threats for the scene.[16] Meera's wedding has been in the news all the time.[17][18] Attiqur Rehman,[19] has claimed that Meera was married to him,[20]however Meera denied her marriage. Reports of her affair with Shoaib Akhtar[21] were also in the news.[22]
